Distance Learning Tools Make Online Learning Convenient

CBU's Online and Professional Studies uses many different types of distance learning tools to make earning an online degree easier.

In order to keep up with the demands of the "new normal" student of today, California Baptist University's Online and Professional Studies is constantly looking for new ways to improve the experience of distance learning for those trying to balance professional and family responsibilities while advancing their education.

This online division provides the ability to meet these needs through flexible scheduling and accelerated programs. The distance learning tools OPS offers make it easier to get an online degree in as little as 16 months.

"From the student perspective there's a benefit for them coming to the university using cutting edge technology such as Webex or Telepresence and transferring some of those skills in the business world," Dr. Tran Hong, Associate Vice President of Technology said.

OPS makes it possible for students all across the globe to pursue bachelor's and master's degrees through the new technology with teleprescene and webex. Students are attending from out of state and even out of the country!

"Mobile devices are really important because we have students on the run when they're going from their job to some place and they want to be able to go on their mobile device," Ted Meyer, Dean of Enrollment Services said. "They'll maybe watch a lecture if they're on a plane, train, automobile even on the little iPad the picture quality is amazing."

These distance learning tools make it possible for students to be engaged and interact with one another in a non-traditional setting.

Distance Learning Technologies

Blackboard 9.1

Blackboard 9.1 is the learning platform that online students will use primarily. Blackboard allows students to view and turn in assignments, check their grades, collaborate and group message other students, use student resources and interact through discussion boards, blogs and voice threads.

Voice Thread

Voice Thread is a web tool that allows for discussions around different kinds of media, such as video, audio, images and documents. Professors load in images or other media ahead of time, and then students can respond through webcam for video, audio or text to the questions.

Webex

Webex is a meeting solution, similar to Skype, professors can use to hold synchronous offices hours and meetings with multiple students. These sessions can be recorded and made available to students unable to make those meetings.

Movi-Cisco

Movi-Cisco is a chat client, similar to Skype, which allows for one-to-one communications in high definition. This can be used for professors to meet with students individually.

Tandberg Cisco Telepresence

Tandberg Cisco Telepresence is a high definition video profile that makes it possible for 20 people to tune in to a video conference at one time using Movi. Meetings and classes can be recorded and shared later.
