What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior. With a degree in psychology, psychology students will learn basic behavioral science principles, general psychology principles, and the theories of different areas of psychology, as well as critical thinking skills and their practical applications. Psychologists help others to understand more about child development, different personalities, counseling, as well as behavioral problems. Our courses are offered to those who wish to start a career in psychology, or those seeking to reach their professional and personal goals that may have been started, but never finished.

Psychology students will not only learn the foundations of psychology, but also obtain a marketable set of skills employers today seek. Through CBU's Online and Professional Studies program, students will learn how to effectively integrate their faith, ethics, and Christian morals into the work-place. By completing an online bachelor's degree in psychology, students will be recognized as excellent candidates for graduate programs in psychology.

Career Highlight: School Counselor

Graduates of California Baptist University's Online and Professional Studies psychology Bachelor's Degree Program have the opportunity to live their purpose and pursue a career path in a variety of professions or pursue graduate studies. Amongst the psychology degree path, one of its most prominent career choices includes becoming School Counselor.

A school counselor’s job description can vary depending on the age group they work with, their work can be a mix of routine tasks including working with individuals or groups to overcome social and behavioral problems, help students in developing skills such as time management, organization, and building good study habits. School counselors usually work in 3 main areas: elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Elementary counselors work with young kids to develop skills such as social and academic skills. Middle school counselors begin to introduce academic and career goals and help develop a plan for students to achieve. High school counselor’s perform some of the same duties, but also help incorporate that plan by putting it into place and creating a schedule to make sure students are on track with their goals. School counselors often act as a medium in helping students resolve conflicts in or outside of school, often times dealing with issues such as bullying, drug abuse, sexual harassment, or any issues that the students may have.

Since School Counselors hold an important position within schools, all school counselors are required to be credentialed, or hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field. Psychology graduates are in high demand both in public and private schools, universities, juvenile justice centers, and private practice. This demand is partially due to the increase of interest in the mental health of children and federal education legislation, as well as the retirement of many School Counselors in the field. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, school counselor job outlook is estimated to increase by 19% from 2010-2020.

The average American makes around $40,000 a year, whereas a School Counselor annual salary is approximately $54,000. Along with great pay you may also be entitled to certain benefits such medical, 401k, and social security.

Graduates looking to pursue a career as a School counselor should exhibit the ability to assess the needs of their students, have a passion and love to help students, and express care and empathy in order to act as an advocate for students. Being a counselor requires you to be a mentor on every aspect, and counselors deal with various situations. A counselor’s main priority is to earn the trust of the students, allowing them to open up and express their feelings, while allowing the students to have a sense of confidentiality.
