Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate Program

- Certificate program is also available for International Students* and Post-baccalaureate students.
- Five courses, three credits each.
- All classes in eight-week, online format.
Program Objectives
To provide excellent short-term language teacher training in a variety of formats (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) to national and international students who wish to teach English as a second language primarily in countries other than the United States.
To provide students with:
- A Christian world view which provides the literary scholar a mechanism with which to explore God’s created world and examine his or her individual role in it as a person of faith.
- A theoretical and critical base from which to examine literature, explore the writing process, understand language, and ground scholarly research that is current, informed, and competitive.
- Pedagogical considerations that provide a balance of theory, content and application particularly for the fields of scholarly pursuits and teaching will be modeled and discussed.
- Comparative or interdisciplinary approach which allows students new avenues of research and investigation in keeping with current movements in the field and in education.
Intended Audience
The TESOL Certificate program is designed for graduate and Post-baccalaureate students from a related major who wish to added specialized skills is TESOL, current or prospective teachers interested in TESOL in the US and those who are pursuing teaching abroad opportunities.

*Applicants must certify English language proficiency by submitted a minimum score of 89 IBY on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a 6.5. on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Admissions Requirements:
- Completion of the application for admission - TESOL
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or the evaluated equivalency of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution)
- Three recommendations from sources that can personally attest to the candidate’s potential for scholarly and professional success.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 for unconditional admission and 2.75 for conditional admission.
- International Students: Applicants must certify English language proficiency by submitting a minimum score of 89 IBT on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
- Essay/Personal Statement: Students must complete a comprehensive essay, of at least 500 words, describing educational and professional goals, including reasons for studying TESOL at CBU.
- Professional development unit cost is $166.00
- Certificate applicable ($2,490 certificate)
