October 03, 2014 - By Maribel Ramirez

At CBU Online and Professional Studies, Applied Journalism Production (JRN 371) is an upper division requirement course for a Bachelors of Arts in Communications as well as Public Relations.  The purpose of this course is to prepare students to be skilled journalist and freelancers. The type of journalism that this course covers includes: newspaper and magazine writing, business writing, website style writing and freelance writing. Students will learn to analyze published material.

What is a freelancer?

A freelancer is a person who is self employed. Freelance work is used in many different professions, but most commonly a freelancer works in the fields of writing and editing, photography, web design, graphic arts, or computer programming. In any given profession, freelancers sell or contract their work to a client rather than being employed by a business.

Creating an online portfolio/ website.

This course helps students create an online portfolio or website, it is important for public relations, communications and journalism students to keep copies of their best articles to send to editors.  Students should create a website that can be updated regularly with new articles, awards or other honors and anything else you'd like editors to know about you. Any time you contact editors, you can simply include a link to your site, making it quicker and easier for them to evaluate your skills.

“I enjoy seeing students gain confidence by building an online portfolio. Some students actually obtain freelance work through this course, ” Says Dr. Mary Ann Pearson, Associate Professor of Public Relations / Director of M.A. in Public Relations.
