Overview

The demand is high for educated and experienced mental health professionals who have the skills to help others overcome the cognitive problems that impede their performance. The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology degree program is centered on providing students with the psychological foundation needed to meet these demands. Whether in the locker room, or in the boardroom, there is a call for professionals who can guide clients in gaining confidence through performance enhancement. Athletes, medical professionals, first responders, performing arts, military, and corporations all seek assistance tapping into the potential of human performance in an effort to maximize their cognitive prowess. Online Learning

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology is comprised of eight-week courses designed for the online environment. These courses allow a level of flexibility that many non-traditional students find rewarding while attempting to balance competing work/life obligations with high academic rigor and expectations.  Students will be prepared for the fast-growing sport psychology and mental health industry. In other words, the program is competitive and comprehensive, while also remaining practical for the working adult with multiple commitments.

Composition

This is a process-based writing class that focuses on academic writing, reading, and critical thinking as expressed in expository and analytical writing assignments through 5 to 7 substantial essays over the course of the semester. Develops fluency, coherence, style, effectiveness, and literary analysis. Students must pass this course with a C- or better or demonstrate a comparable level of writing competence to fulfill general competency requirements and to proceed to ENG 123 - Intermediate Composition. Students may only earn credit for ENG 113 or ENG 113E - Composition Enriched with Lab. (3 units)

Intermediate Composition

Continued practice in writing and research strategies, with emphasis on critical thinking, information literacy, argument, analysis, and interpretation of multicultural and interdisciplinary readings. Includes the writing of a major research paper in addition to several shorter essays. Students may earn credit for either ENG 123 or ENG 123E - Intermediate Composition Enriched with Lab. Prerequisite: ENG 113 with a grade of C- or better or evidence of comparable level of writing competency. Life Span Development

The course addresses principles of psychological development across time and culture. Students will understand universal stages of human development, influences on individual differences and the impact of nature and nurture. The course views human development as a unit of interrelated parts, concentrating on the relationships between the mind, body, and the socio-cultural context. Cognitive Psychology

This course provides an introduction into the structure and processes of the mind, focusing on topics including perception, attention, memory, decision-making, and consciousness. Students will engage with research examining cognition from a behavioral, information-processing, and a physiological perspective. Additionally, students will engage with the philosophical/epistemological assumptions in the study of cognition, with relevant applications in domains such as artificial intelligence, criminal justice, and theology. Psychology of Performance Recovery

Psychology of Performance Recovery

This focus of this course is on addressing the practice of psychological issues and cognitive variables that may hinder oneâ??s performance recovery. The complex psychological nature of recovery, both physical and cognitive, whether from injury or psychological distress, will be discussed. This course will allow the student to explore performance recovery from multiple areas and approaches, as well as concentrating on theoretical foundations of behaviors, psychological intervention of performance problems, prevention, recovery, and strategies/mental health issues related to performance.
