Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology degree program is centered on providing students with the foundation needed for a career in the sport psychology counseling field. The demand is high for educated and experienced mental health professionals in the field of athletics. The fully online B.S. in Sport and Performance Psychology curriculum is focused on core disciplines, including social focus, cognitive practices, athletic application, theoretical knowledge, professionalism and ethics, among others. 

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology is an ethically based program that emphasizes strategic thinking, communication, character development, psychological training, and systems of accountability for current and future athletic leaders. Graduates of the B.S. in Sport and Performance Psychology degree program will have the knowledge to work with many different types of populations such as high school athletes, recreational athletes, elite athletes, injured athletes, military and law enforcement personnel, non-athletic performers, elderly, business professionals, and individuals with health concerns. The online Sport and Performance Psychology degree is aligned to transition students into the following CBU graduate degree programs: PsyD (on campus), MS in Kinesiology (online), Master of Sport and Performance Psychology (on campus), and the Master of Counseling Psychology (online and on campus).

Online Learning

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Performance Psychology is comprised of eight-week courses designed for the online environment. These courses allow a level of flexibility that many non-traditional students find rewarding while attempting to balance competing work/life obligations with high academic rigor and expectations.  Students will be prepared for the fast-growing sport psychology and mental health industry. In other words, the program is competitive and comprehensive, while also remaining practical for the working adult with multiple commitments.

Composition

This is a process-based writing class that focuses on academic writing, reading, and critical thinking as expressed in expository and analytical writing assignments through 5 to 7 substantial essays over the course of the semester. Develops fluency, coherence, style, effectiveness, and literary analysis. Students must pass this course with a C- or better or demonstrate a comparable level of writing competence to fulfill general competency requirements and to proceed to ENG 123 - Intermediate Composition. Students may only earn credit for ENG 113 or ENG 113E - Composition Enriched with Lab. (3 units)

Intermediate Composition

Continued practice in writing with emphasis on critical thinking, argument, analysis and interpretation of multicultural readings and other interdisciplinary expository materials. Includes the writing of a major research paper (or report) in addition to several shorter essays requiring various types of documentation. Students may only earn credit for ENG 123 or ENG 123E - Intermediate Composition Enriched with Lab. Prerequisite: ENG 113 with a grade of C- or better or evidence of comparable level of writing competency. Life Span Development

The course addresses principles of psychological development across time and culture. Students will understand universal stages of human development, influences on individual differences and the impact of nature and nurture. The course views human development as a unit of interrelated parts, concentrating on the relationships between the mind, body, and the socio-cultural context. Sport and Performance Psychology Capstone

This course provides sport and performance psychology students the opportunity to integrate and demonstrate learning from their major, evaluate their own strengths/weaknesses and demonstrate an understanding of the integration of a Christian worldview and their major field of study.
